Who We Are
We are a Martial Arts school dedicated to training our students in the Whe Chun System, a traditional, family-based form of Kung Fu Wu Su descended from the Mongolian Chou Con Di System. We teach combat skills appropriate across a broad range of life situations. We expect these skills to prepare our students to be the best possible family members, community members, citizens, employees and employers. To support these combat skills we practice a rigorous physical and mental conditioning program.
We are not a typical sport, or other familiar after-school activity. We are an intense and concentrated version of our students’ larger world. At the Dojo students interact with their friends and instructors as they learn and practice the forms and techniques of combat. We are a place where self-control is practiced and respect and responsibility are expected.
We are like an extended family, ranging in age from about 5 to almost 80. We function a little like family and a little like school in teaching knowledge about the world. What we add is focused attention to the development of internal awareness and understanding of ourselves. In research on life success one of the most powerful predictors that emerges is self-control. We specialize in the development of self-control. It begins with self-awareness and discipline.
With our children we focus on developing self-discipline; with our older family members we focus on maintaining it. In order to live a long and productive life it is helpful to be able to be as strong and balanced and flexible and cardio fit as our lives allow. Self-discipline can wane as life challenges accumulate, but willpower is a skill improved by training. We have programs for all family members to help them maintain their preferred lifestyles and achieve their life goals
Training for willpower and mental discipline and self-control is enhanced by the practice of meditation. Most of our classes begin with meditation practice aimed at controlling attention. This practice develops skill at controlling one’s mind, a skill from which many other abilities will flow.
